Our Dumb Internet
Monday March 24th 2008, 9:29 am

If you’re like me, you don’t have nearly enough domain names.

Today I had a simple dream, to register a domain name called “webbutt.com” and put something stupid on it.

But of course it’s taken, and some diabolical mastermind has it parked at Godaddy, waiting for someone with a hilarious notion to pay top dollar for the valuable domain. Well not this sucker. I’ll just take “buttweb.com”.

Blast! And what is on buttweb.com NSFW is far funnier than what I am capable of.

I got curious as to how many idiotic domains were already taken.

Well, of course “web.com” is taken. And naturally “webweb.com”. And I guess “webwebweb.com”. How far out does this go? At the time of writing this post, you would have to take a domain of no less than 12 successive “web”s to get a .com in this manner.

Still trying to think of a good idea for a web site, I decided to copy Godaddy since they seemed like they were doing well. So I searched for “gogodaddy.com” (you know, with an extra “go” so it wouldn’t be obvious I was copying their idea). Godaddy would have none of it, and simply wouldn’t return a valid search. (Try it yourself.)

So I went to Network Solutions for my great website idea domain name search:

It seems you would need three extra “go”s just to attempt this venture. Then I had another idea.

How many successive “go”s would you need to register a .com domain? Fifteen. “But wait,” you say, “does this actually mean there’s a www.gogogogogogogogogogogogogogo.com website? Yes.

My favorite pointless domain name registration oddity are the alphabet posts. www.a.com isn’t a valid domain. ab.com is a juicy one, and of course taken. Likewise with abc.com. how far does it go?

CORRECTION FROM EARLIER POST: All the way. Every iteration of the alphabet in order, starting with the letter “a”, is taken, including the entire alphabet. Visit www.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com for all your alphabet needs.
